About Me

I am Günter Obiltschnig, a software engineer with 18 years of experience doing software development and architecture. My main interests are distributed systems, embedded systems, XML and middleware technologies. Despite occasional adventures in the Brave New World of Java and .NET, I still like to express my thoughts in C++. I live in the southern part of Austria, but I travel the world whenever possible. I am in the lucky position to work for my own company, Applied Informatics, and I am the founder of the POCO C++ Libraries open source project.

I have been programming computers since age 12. In my career I have programmed everything from 8 bit home computers (C64, MSX) to IBM big iron systems (COBOL and JCL, VM/CMS and CICS), various Unix systems, OpenVMS, Windows NT in its various incarnations, the Mac (classic Mac OS and OS X), to embedded devices.

I have a diploma (MSc. equivalent) in Computer Science from the University of Linz, Austria. I am a member of the ACM, the IEEE Computer Society and the Association of C and C++ Users.

When I am not working, I spend time with my family or enjoy one of my hobbies – sailing, running, listening to or making music or reading. I don’t watch TV anymore, but spend way too much time on the internet.
